FAQ's

  • How do I start the adoption process?

You can begin by submitting an adoption application. This helps us understand your experience, environment, and what you’re looking for in a horse. From there, we’ll connect with you to talk through next steps and potential matches.

How long does the adoption process take?

The timeline varies depending on the horse and the situation. Some adoptions move quickly, while others take more time to ensure the right fit. Our focus is on making thoughtful, lasting placements—not rushing the process.

Can I meet the horse before adopting?

Yes, whenever possible. We encourage meet-and-greet visits so you can spend time with the horse and get a feel for the connection before moving forward.

    Do you offer trial periods?

In some cases, we may allow a trial or transition period depending on the situation. This is handled on a case-by-case basis and always with the horse’s wellbeing as the top priority.

  • Do I need prior horse experience to adopt?

Experience is strongly preferred, especially for horses that require rehabilitation or ongoing training. However, we are open to working with individuals who are committed to learning and have access to proper guidance and support.

What kind of environment do I need?

Adopters should be able to provide a safe, appropriate space with proper fencing, shelter, access to clean water, and consistent feeding routines. We may ask questions or request photos to ensure the environment is suitable.

What are my responsibilities as an adopter?

Adopters are responsible for providing ongoing care, including:

    • Daily feeding and clean water

    • Routine veterinary care

    • Regular farrier visits

    • Safe shelter and environment

    • Time, patience, and consistent handling

Adoption is a long-term commitment, and we want both you and the horse to feel supported in that responsibility.

  • What kind of horses do you rescue?

We work with horses from a variety of backgrounds, including neglect situations, owner surrenders, and horses in need of rehoming. Each horse has a different history, temperament, and level of training.

    Are the horses trained?

Some horses may have prior training, while others may need additional work and patience. We do our best to share what we know about each horse so you can make an informed decision.

Will I receive information about the horse’s history?

Yes. We share as much information as we have, including temperament, known history, and any medical or behavioral considerations.

  • Is there an adoption fee?

Yes. Adoption fees vary depending on the horse and the level of care provided. These fees help support the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of other horses.

What does the adoption fee cover?

Adoption fees help offset costs such as:

    • Feed and daily care

    • Veterinary services

    • Farrier work

    • Rehabilitation and handling

    Our goal is sustainability—not profit.

What ongoing costs should I expect?

Owning a horse includes ongoing expenses such as feed, vet care, farrier services, boarding (if applicable), and general maintenance. It’s important to be financially prepared for long-term care.

    Do you offer trial periods?

In some cases, we may allow a trial or transition period depending on the situation. This is handled on a case-by-case basis and always with the horse’s wellbeing as the top priority.

  • Do you provide support after adoption?

Yes. We offer guidance and support after adoption to help ensure a smooth transition. We’re here if questions or challenges come up along the way.

What if the adoption doesn’t work out?

If a situation changes and you can no longer care for the horse, we ask that the horse be returned to Spirit Walker Ranch rather than rehomed elsewhere. This ensures their continued safety and proper placement.

  • Can I visit the ranch?

Visits are typically by appointment only. This helps us maintain a calm, safe environment for the horses and ensures we can give each visitor proper attention

    Can I volunteer?

As we grow, we plan to offer volunteer opportunities. If you’re interested, we encourage you to reach out or follow along for updates.

How else can I support the ranch?

You can support Spirit Walker Ranch by:

    • Donating

    • Sharing our mission

    • Following our journey

    • Recommending responsible adopters

Every bit of support helps us continue this work.

  • Do I need horse experience?

Not always. Some roles may require experience, while others do not. A willingness to learn and follow safety guidance is important.

    Is volunteering physical?

It can be. Some tasks involve lifting, walking, cleaning, and working outdoors.

    Can children volunteer?

Possibly, depending on age and the type of volunteer opportunity. Parent or guardian permission may be required.

How often do I need to volunteer?

This may depend on the ranch’s current needs and available opportunities.

Will I work directly with horses?

Some volunteers may, but not every role involves direct horse handling.
